Canadians do things a little bit differently than the rest of the world. Let’s go over 10 Popular Canadian Slang words and what they mean.
10 Popular Canadian Words
1. Caesar
If you order a Caesar from an American bartender, you might get a salad instead. For our friends south of the border, a Bloody Mary is the closest thing, but it’s not the same. It needs that tasty clam juice! Although that sounds very weird, it basically just adds a salty taste. There is no fishy taste added. Canadians can get pretty crazy topping their Caesars. Even putting whole meals on top of the glass! If you see a caesar you probably want one.
2.Hydro Bill
Canadians pay hydro bills, while Americans pay utility bills or electric bills. And because Canadian cities and towns have some of the worst winters, that hydro bill may add up quickly. Some people also call it an Electric bill, but Hydro would be understood as the bill that gives you heating and electricity.
3. Freezies
Long thing popsicles from the freezer? They’re dubbed “freezies” by us Canadians. And we prefer to spend our summer vacation money on them! They are called freezies because the most popular brand is Mr. Freeze as you can see by this photo. Freezies by Mr. Freeze. A great Canadian summer treat staple.
4.Serviette
When you can use something as fancy-sounding as a serviette, why use a napkin? I mean technically they are the same thing, but Serviette is what it is called in Canada. Napkin is used as well.
5.Canadian Tuxedo
When paired with a pair of blue jeans, a blue denim jacket is a must-have. That’s a tuxedo made in Canada, and we’re proud of it! Even our American pals are fans: remember Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears at the American Music Awards in 2001? Probably not, but the blue denim jacket is fancy in the right settings.
6. Timbit
Timbits from Tim Hortons have been engrained in Canadian society. These are tiny bite-sized donuts. Like the hole that is punched out of the full-size donut. That is a Timbit. In the United States? Not at all. It’s a doughnut ball, for our American pals!
7. KD (Kraft Dinner)
Canadians are so fond of Kraft Dinner that we’ve condensed the orangey, chesesy, mac-and-cheese name to two letters, KD, which will puzzle your American friends who won’t know what you’re talking about. They call it Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in USA not Kraft Dinner.
8. Pencil Crayons
Colored pencils are referred to as “pencil crayons” in Canada. I had a hard time with this one as Colored pencils just seems… wrong. Very wrong. Pencil crayons are obviously what they are.
9. Elastics
What about rubber bands? These helpful rubber guys well, we call them elastics in Canada. Both the brown ones and the ones that go in your hair.
10. Housecoat
The housecoat is the Canadian name for the item of clothing that Americans refer to as a bathrobe or (if they’re feeling fancy) a dressing gown. It makes sense too as it is usually the item that you well, wear around the house eh?
